Magnetically supported tori in active galactic nuclei

چکیده
We explore the concept that the gas tori inferred to exist around the central black holes in many active galactic nuclei (AGN) have significant magnetic pressure support. We derive the basic equations for magnetically supported tori with a general axisymmetric B field involving toroidal and poloidal components. We treat strong and weak field limits assuming the aspect ratio R/a larger than unity, where R is the major radius of the torus, and a is the minor radius. For strong fields, the major radius is influenced by the B field, whereas for weak fields only the minor radius is affected by the field. In the strong field limit, stability to kink perturbations is possible only for R/a approaching unity, just where our theory breaks down. The weak field tori tend to be kink stable for R/a < ∼ 13. This suggests that magnetically supported tori in nature need to be “fat” in order to be stable. This appears to be consistent with observations of tori in AGN. We note that some fat disks around young stars and around more evolved stars represent magnetically supported tori.

A strongly magnetized turbulent accretion disc model with application to active galactic nuclei
We develop a model of thin turbulent accretion discs supported by magnetic pressure of turbulent magnetic fields. This applies when the turbulent kinetic and magnetic energy densities are equal to or greater than the thermal energy density in the disc. Our model applies to both stellar mass and galactic mass accretion engines. However, a primary motivation comes from the 30–40 per cent contribu...
متن کاملSearch for Free-Free Absorption Cutoffs from Tori in Three Type 2 Active Galactic Nuclei
We have observed three Type 2 radio loud active galactic nuclei using the VLBA at five frequencies between 1.6 GHz and 15 GHz, in a search for the free-free absorption cutoff predicted by some models for optically-obscuring dusty molecular tori. We find no evidence for sharp cutoffs toward low frequencies in any of the sources. However, one source, OW637, has VLBI components which are steeply f...
متن کاملMagnetic reconnection: flares and coronal heating in Active Galactic Nuclei
A magnetically–structured accretion disk corona, generated by buoyancy instability in the disk, can account for observations of flare–like events in Active Galactic Nuclei. We examine how Petschek magnetic reconnection, associated with MHD turbulence, can result in a violent release of energy and heat the magnetically closed regions of the corona up to canonical X-ray emitting temperatures. X-r...
متن کاملDusty Tori of Seyfert Nuclei
Dusty tori around active galactic nuclei (AGNs) play an important role in the classification of Seyfert galaxies. (Antonucci & Miller 1985; see also Antonucci 1993 for a review). Seyfert galaxies observed from a face-on view of the torus are recognized as type 1 Seyferts (S1s) while those observed from an edge-on view are recognized as type 2 Seyferts (S2s). Therefore, physical properties of du...
متن کاملCyclo–synchrotron emission from magnetically dominated active regions above accretion discs
We discuss the role of thermal cyclo–synchrotron emission in a magnetically dominated corona above an accretion disk in an active galaxy or a galactic black hole candidate. The dissipation occurs in localized active regions around the central black hole. Cyclo– synchrotron radiation is found to be an important process. In the case of galactic black hole candidates, its emission can dominate the...
